CyberInquiry Created in Module 3

We’re Going To Create A Word
                Document!

To begin our tutorial we are going to use Microsoft WordPerfect a word processing document commonly  found on most computers.   You can use this program for all your writing needs such as writing letters, documents, handouts for students and more.  Open up your WordPerfect program and you will see a page that looks like this:

Using your mouse, move the cursor to the word file on the top menu tool bar.  Click on it and select the word NEW to open up a new document.

The Horizontal and Vertical scroll bars, if turned on, enable you to move up and down or across the window simply by pressing the icons located on the scroll bars. The Horizontal scroll bar is located above the Status bar. The Vertical scroll bar is located along the right side of the screen. To move up and down your document, click and drag the Vertical scroll bar up and down. To move back and forth across your document, click and drag the Horizontal scroll bar.

Ok, now we have an open blank document.  How would you like your text to look.  Would you like to use the WordPerfect default size 12 font, or perhaps you would like to use  a larger font, a medium font or a smaller font than 12. To change the size of your font locate the word Format on the top Menu bar.  Click on it and select the size font you prefer.  You will see the size change on the lower left hand corner on the box and this will aide you in deciding the size

you would like.  Within the format box you can select the different font size, color and style.  Take a minute to play with the format of your text.  You can preview your changes in the format preview box below.  Click ok to keep the changes you’ve made.  You can also use a shortcut to change the size and style of the font.  Look on the Menu bar and on the lower left you will see WordPerfect’s default Times New Roman and a downward arrow.  Click on the arrow and you can change the style of the text.  You can do the same with the font size located adjacent to the font style.

Now  we’ve set our page up and decided on the size and color of our text.  Perhaps you would like to create a list of questions or items.  You can do this in two ways. You can number your list or you can bullet your list.

1. You can select the bullet or number style you would like to use by clicking on the example box then clicking OK.
2. Go ahead and type the text.  When you press the Enter key, each line will automatically begin with the number or bullet style you selected.
3. When you complete typing your list, press enter, then click on the correct bullet or numbering button so the remaining text will not have bullets or numbers.

4. Place the cursor where you want the list to begin.
5. Select the Format Menu, then select Bullets and Numbering.  The Bullets and Numbering dialog box appears.
6. You can select the bullet or number style you would like to use by clicking on the example box then clicking OK.
7. Go ahead and type the text.  When you press the Enter key, each line will automatically begin with the number or bullet style you selected.
8. When you complete typing your list, press enter, then click on the correct bullet or numbering button so the remaining text will not have bullets or numbers.

Would you like to add graphics to spice up your document?  You can find these graphics in many different places.  Let’s see what WordPerfect has to offer.  Click on the word “Insert” found on the menu bar.

1.    Click Insert on the menu bar, point to Picture, and then click From File.
The Insert Picture dialog box displays.
2.    Select the folder containing the image you want to insert..
3.    Click the image that you want to insert and then click the Insert button.

4.    Click the Save button on the Standard toolbar.

You can also find a picture on the internet and right click on the image.  Select copy image.
Then return to your document and place the cursor where you would like the image.  Right click the mouse again and select paste image and presto! There it is!

If you do this, you must cite your image source.  To cite an image source type year stated on the Web site-current year URL.

You’re document is really coming along and it looks like you’ve been using WordPerfect like a pro.  Perhaps you are looking for information on the internet and would like to insert a link for others to view and use.  You can select a word or phrase to link to a web page.

The Insert Hyperlink dialog box displays with a variety of Link to: options available.
Type, or copy and paste, the URL you want to link to into the Address: text box on the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.  Then click ok.  Now you’re “linked up!”

After all this hard work you have created a document that you’d like to save for future use.  Look up at the menu bar and select file.  Look for “save” or “save as”.  Save will save your current document but “save as” will allow you to save it with a name that you can identify and retrieve late.  You can also choose where you would like to save the document to, perhaps an existing file folder or location.  You can find more information on word processing on the Microsoft Word Processing wed site where they offer a free tutorial on their program.  http://www.baycongroup.com/word.htm.  Using a word processing program like WordPerfect is a terrific tool that can help you create  wonderful projects, lessons and documents.  Use it-you’ll be glad you did!
